Frequently asked questions
What is Base64 used for?
Base64 turns binary or special data into plain letters, digits, + and /, so it can travel safely through systems that only handle text: email attachments, data URLs in HTML and CSS, JSON and XML payloads, and HTTP headers such as Basic authentication.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or secrets.
Why is the Base64 text longer than my original?
Base64 represents every 3 bytes with 4 characters, so encoded data is about 33% larger than the original.
Does it work with accents, Cyrillic or emoji?
Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 before conversion, so “é”, “Привет” or 😀 encode and decode correctly.
What does “=” at the end mean?
The “=” characters are padding. They appear when the input length is not a multiple of 3 bytes, so the decoder knows how many bytes the last group holds.
