How to play Sea Battle

  1. Choose a battle: against the computer (Easy, Normal or Hard), 2 players on one device, or the Daily battle.
  2. Pick Classic rules (10 ships that never touch) or Modern rules (5 ships).
  3. Place your fleet: drag ships to move them, tap a ship to turn it, or press Shuffle, then start the battle.
  4. Fire at the enemy sea by tapping or clicking a square: a white dot is a miss, a red cross is a hit.
  5. Hit every square of a ship to sink it. With Classic rules a hit gives you another shot.
  6. Sink the whole enemy fleet before your own fleet is sunk to win.

On a computer you can also aim with the arrow keys and fire with Enter or Space. The enemy fleet panel shows which ships are still afloat.

Modes

vs Computer is the classic game against a captain of your choice. 2 players is pass-and-play on one phone, tablet or computer: a privacy screen hides the fleets every time the device changes hands. The Daily battle hides the same enemy fleet for everyone each day, so you can compare how many shots you needed.

The computer captain

Easy fires mostly at random and is perfect for learning. Normal searches in a checkerboard and finishes ships it has found. Hard is a probability hunter: before every shot it counts all the ways the ships still afloat could be placed and fires where a ship is most likely to be.

Ranks and XP

Every battle earns XP. A win gives more XP for fewer shots, better accuracy, more ships still afloat and a harder opponent. XP promotes you from Cadet through Ensign, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, Commodore, Rear Admiral and Vice Admiral up to Admiral.

Leaderboards

Wins against the computer are ranked by fewest shots, with boards for Classic rules, Modern rules and the Daily battle, for today, this week and all time. Open the podium button to see them; you only pick a nickname if you want to join.

Badges

There are 25 badges for victories, winning on Hard, sharp shooting, hit streaks, flawless fleets, quick wins, daily battles and naval ranks. Open the medal button in the game to see your progress.

Sea Battle tips

  1. Search in a checkerboard. Every ship longer than one square crosses at least one square of a checkerboard pattern.
  2. Finish what you hit. After a hit, try the four neighbours, then follow the line.
  3. Use the empty water. With Classic rules, ships never touch, so the squares around a sunk ship are always empty.
  4. Hunt the big ships first. Once the long ships are gone, the small ones have more room to hide, so widen your pattern.
  5. Hide your fleet well. Avoid neat rows and corners only; mix ships in open water and along the edges.
  6. Watch the fleet panel. It tells you which ship lengths are still out there.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sea Battle free?

Yes. Sea Battle is completely free to play online, with no sign-up, no download and no in-app purchases. It runs in your browser on computers, tablets and phones, and your rank, records and badges are saved on your device.

Is Sea Battle the same as Battleship?

Sea Battle is a Battleship-style game, the classic pencil-and-paper naval game also known as Sea Battle, Battleships or Morskoy Boy: each side hides a fleet on a 10 × 10 grid and takes turns calling shots until one fleet is sunk. This version has its own art, rules options and features. Battleship is a trademark of Hasbro; Sea Battle is an independent game and is not affiliated with or endorsed by it.

How do I play Sea Battle?

First place your fleet on your grid: drag ships to move them, tap a ship to turn it, or press Shuffle. Then fire at the enemy sea by tapping or clicking a square. A white dot means a miss and a red cross means a hit. When every square of a ship is hit, it sinks. Sink the whole enemy fleet before the enemy sinks yours.

What is the difference between Classic and Modern rules?

Classic rules use 10 ships (one of 4 squares, two of 3, three of 2 and four of 1). Ships may not touch each other, not even at the corners, and a hit lets you fire again. When a ship sinks, the water around it is marked automatically. Modern rules use 5 ships of 5, 4, 3, 3 and 2 squares, ships may touch, and the players take turns one shot at a time.

How smart is the computer?

Easy fires almost at random. Normal hunts on a checkerboard pattern and finishes a ship once it finds one. Hard works out the probability of every square from all the ways the remaining ships could still be placed, so it is a real challenge.

Can two people play on one device?

Yes. Choose 2 players: each player places a fleet, then you pass the device back and forth. A privacy screen hides both fleets while the device changes hands, so nobody can peek.

What is the Daily battle?

The Daily battle puts the same enemy fleet in the same places for every player each day, with Classic rules. Win it in as few shots as you can and compare on the Daily leaderboard.

How do the leaderboards work?

Wins against the computer are ranked by the number of shots you needed: fewer is better. There are boards for Classic rules, Modern rules and the Daily battle, for today, this week and all time. You only choose a nickname if you want to join.

What are ranks and XP?

Every battle earns XP: more for winning, fewer shots, better accuracy, ships still afloat and harder opponents. XP promotes you through 10 naval ranks, from Cadet to Admiral.

What is the best strategy for Sea Battle?

Search in a checkerboard pattern, because every ship covers at least two squares in a row (in Modern rules), then finish a ship as soon as you hit it. With Classic rules ships never touch, so the squares around a sunk ship are always empty. When you hide your fleet, avoid patterns and mix ships at the edges and in open water.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Sea Battle works in portrait and landscape on phones and tablets. In portrait the enemy sea is large on top and your fleet is shown below; tap a square to fire.
