Word Blaster: typing shooter game, online free

Word Blaster is a free typing game in space. A fleet of ships flies at your station and every ship carries a word: type it to lock on and fire your laser, letter by letter, until the ship explodes. Build combos for bigger scores, grab smart bombs, slow motion and shield repairs, and take down a giant mothership at the end of every sector. Fight through 8 sectors, each with its own alien fleet and its own world scrolling below you, from planets and asteroid fields to jungle, ice, lava and a city planet. Your ship upgrades through six forms as your score grows, from the Scout to the Nova Dreadnought. Play Easy, Normal and Hard, chase 72 stars and 25 badges, or see how far you get in Endless and the Daily mission with free leaderboards. The words are the most common words in English, so every game trains real typing speed. It works on computers and on phones with a built-in keyboard.

How to play Word Blaster

  1. Pick a mission: a campaign sector (Easy, Normal or Hard), Endless or the Daily mission.
  2. Ships fly towards your station at the bottom of the screen, each carrying a word.
  3. Start typing a word: the first letter locks your laser onto the closest ship with that letter.
  4. Every correct letter fires a shot; the last letter destroys the ship. Clean words build your combo.
  5. Destroy glowing ships for power-ups: Enter fires a smart bomb.
  6. Do not let ships reach the station: each one costs a shield, and with no shields left the game is over.
  7. Survive 10 waves and defeat the mothership to clear the sector and earn up to three stars.

You never have to aim: the word is the target. When you type a letter without a lock, your laser chooses the closest ship whose word starts with it, and stays on that ship until it explodes. The ships come from every direction and get faster wave after wave, so the trick is to keep a steady rhythm, always finish the nearest threat first and never look down at the keyboard.

Controls

  • Letters and Space: type the words (phrases on bombers and the mothership contain spaces).
  • Enter fires a smart bomb when you have one; Backspace drops your lock; Esc pauses.
  • Phones and tablets: the on-screen keyboard lights up the next letter of your target and has keys for space, the smart bomb and dropping the lock.

Your ship: six forms

Every game starts with the nimble Scout. As your score grows, the ship transforms in a flash of light: the Twin Blaster (1,500 points) fires from two wing guns, the Wing Striker (5,000) adds wingtip pods and green lasers, the Plasma Lancer (10,000) charges a violet plasma orb, the Drone Carrier (18,000) launches two drones that orbit and fire with you, and the Nova Dreadnought (30,000) brings three cannons, three drones and a glowing aura. The forms change the look and the lasers, not the rules, so every score is fair.

Score and stars

Every correct letter scores 10 points and every destroyed ship 15 points per letter, all multiplied by your combo: ×1.5 after 10 clean words in a row, ×2 after 20 and ×2.5 after 30. A wrong key resets the combo. Clearing a wave adds a bonus, and a perfect wave with no wrong key adds 400 more. A mothership is worth 2,000 points times your combo.

In the campaign each sector earns one star for clearing it, two if you lost at most one shield and three for losing no shield with at least 95% accuracy.

Endless and the Daily mission

Endless keeps sending waves until your station falls, faster and bigger each time, with the sectors changing every ten waves and a mothership every tenth wave. The Daily mission uses the same rules, but the fleet is the same for everyone each day, so you can compare scores fairly. Both have free leaderboards for today, this week and all time; you only choose a nickname if you want to join.

Badges

There are 25 badges for destroying motherships, clearing every sector, combos of 25, 50 and 100, flawless sectors, big Endless scores, perfect waves and more. Open the medal button in the game to see your progress.

Tips

  1. Nearest first. Your laser locks onto the closest ship with the letter you type; finish it before starting the next.
  2. Don't look down. Glancing at the keyboard costs more time than a wrong key. Learn touch typing in the Typing Dojo.
  3. Accuracy keeps your combo. A steady, clean rhythm scores far more than rushing.
  4. Save the bomb. Keep a smart bomb for the moment a crowd of ships gets close.
  5. Watch the darts and splitters. Darts are quick; splitters turn into two ships, so don't leave them until the last second.
  6. Measure your speed. Check your words per minute in the Typing Speed Test and watch it climb.

Frequently asked questions

Is Word Blaster free?

Yes. Word Blaster on Util.Ninja is completely free, with no sign-up, no download and no in-app purchases. It runs in your browser on computers, tablets and phones, and your stars, scores and badges are saved on your device.

How do I play Word Blaster?

Ships fly towards your space station, and every ship carries a word. Type the word: the first letter locks your laser onto that ship, every correct letter fires a shot and the last letter destroys it. A ship that reaches the station costs one of your three shields. Clear the waves before your shields run out.

Which ship do I lock onto?

When you type a letter without a lock, your laser picks the closest ship whose word starts with that letter. The lock stays until the ship explodes. Press Backspace to drop the lock and switch to another ship (its word starts again). New ships try to start with letters no other ship on screen uses, so the first letter is almost always enough.

What happens when I press a wrong key?

Nothing breaks: you simply keep typing the right letter. But a wrong key resets your combo, and the combo multiplies your points by up to 2.5 times, so accuracy pays.

What are the power-ups?

From wave 3 on, a glowing ship crosses the top of the screen once per wave. Type its word to collect what it carries: a smart bomb (press Enter to destroy every ship on screen), a slow-motion field that slows the fleet for six seconds, or a shield repair.

What is the mothership?

The 10th wave of every sector is a boss: a huge mothership that hovers at the top and keeps launching drones. Its hull is a series of long words and phrases; type them one after another while dealing with its drones. Destroy it to clear the sector.

What are splitters and darts?

Splitters break into two small drones when you destroy them. Darts, from the Emerald Drift sector on, are tiny, very fast ships with short words. Bombers are big and slow but carry long words or whole phrases.

What other enemy ships are there?

New kinds join the fleet sector by sector: weavers swing in wide curves, shades fade in and out like ghosts (their words always stay visible), orbiters circle your ship as they close in, stingers zigzag at high speed and armoured tanks crawl in with the longest words. Every sector also has its own alien design: raider jets, swarm bugs, crystal shards, storm mechs, void creatures, ice spears, flame arrows and a saucer armada.

How does my ship upgrade?

Your ship changes as your score grows in every game: the Scout becomes a Twin Blaster at 1,500 points, a Wing Striker at 5,000, a Plasma Lancer at 10,000, a Drone Carrier with orbiting drones at 18,000 and finally the Nova Dreadnought at 30,000. Each form has its own hull, guns and laser colour. The upgrades change the look and the lasers, not the rules, so scores stay fair on the leaderboards.

How do stars work?

Each campaign sector gives up to three stars per difficulty. One star for clearing it, two if you lost no more than one shield, and three for losing no shield at all with 95% accuracy or better. There are 72 stars to collect across the 8 sectors in Easy, Normal and Hard.

What are Endless and the Daily mission?

Endless never stops: the fleet grows and speeds up wave after wave, the sectors change every ten waves and a mothership arrives every tenth wave. The Daily mission is the same, but the fleet is identical for everyone each day. Both have free leaderboards for today, this week and all time.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Word Blaster shows its own on-screen keyboard on phones and tablets, with the next letter of your target lit up, a space bar for phrases, a bomb key and a key to drop your lock. The screen works in portrait and landscape.

Which difficulty should I choose?

Easy uses slow ships and short, simple words, many of them using only the first keys taught in the Typing Dojo. Normal is the standard game. Hard sends faster ships, bigger waves and long words and phrases. Endless and the Daily mission always use Normal rules so that leaderboards are fair.

Does Word Blaster help me type faster?

Yes. It trains exactly what speed typing needs: recognising a word at a glance and typing it without looking at the keyboard, under a little pressure. The words are the most frequent words in English, and your speed in words per minute and your accuracy are shown after every game.

Do I need an account to keep my progress?

No. Your progress is stored in your browser on this device. Leaderboards are optional: you choose a nickname only if you want your score on the board, and you can delete your scores at any time.

Is there sound?

Yes: lasers, explosions, alarms and an original synth soundtrack for the sectors, all made in your browser with the Web Audio API. Sound and music can be switched off separately in Settings, and the game pauses itself when you switch tabs.
