    How to play Word Search

    1. Choose a theme and a level, or start the daily puzzle.
    2. Read the list of hidden words below or beside the grid.
    3. Find a word in the grid: it runs in a straight line across, down, diagonally or backwards depending on the level.
    4. Drag from the first letter to the last letter, or tap the first and then the last letter, to mark it.
    5. Find every word on the list to finish the puzzle, earn stars and record your time.

Every word in the list is hidden somewhere in the grid as a straight, unbroken line of letters. The remaining squares are filled with random letters, and some of them form decoys: a word can appear to start in several places, but only one copy runs all the way through. When you mark a word correctly it gets its own coloured highlighter stroke, and the word in the list is crossed off. If you happen to find a second, accidental copy of a word, that counts too.

    Difficulty levels

    LevelGridWordsDirections
Easy8×88Left to right and top to bottom only
    Medium11×1112Across, down and diagonally down
Hard13×1315All eight directions, including backwards and upwards
Daily11×1112Same as Medium, one shared puzzle per day

Easy is perfect for young readers and quick coffee breaks. Medium is the classic newspaper experience. Hard is where real word hunters go: backwards words are surprisingly difficult to spot because your brain is trained to read only in one direction.

    All themes

    Each theme has 20 or more hand-picked, family-friendly words, so every new puzzle draws a different selection: 🦁 Animals · 🌊 Ocean · 🍓 Fruits · 🥕 Vegetables · 🚀 Space · ⚽ Sports · ⛅ Weather · 🫀 Human body · 🍳 Kitchen · 🎵 Music · 🎨 Colors · 👩‍🔧 Jobs · 🏫 School · 🚂 Transport · 🌲 Nature · 🌍 Countries · 😊 Feelings · 👕 Clothes · 🐞 Insects · 🦜 Birds · 🌻 Garden · 🐄 Farm · ❄️ Winter · ☀️ Summer · 🎃 Halloween · 🎂 Birthday · 🏠 House · 💻 Technology · ⛺ Camping · 🏴‍☠️ Pirates · 🥷 Ninja dojo · 🍕 Food.

Completed themes are marked with a tick in the theme picker, so you can try to collect them all.

    Strategies of fast word hunters

    1. Hunt the rare letters. Letters like Q, Z, X, J and K appear only a few times in the grid. If a word contains one, find that letter first and then check the eight neighbours around it.
    2. Look for double letters. Pairs such as LL, EE, OO or SS are easy to spot and narrow down words like balloon, coffee or puzzle.
    3. Scan line by line. Instead of searching randomly, move your eyes along one row at a time looking for the first letter, then check all directions from every hit.
    4. Search for the longest words first. Long words cross many rows or columns, so they are easier to see, and once they are marked the grid becomes less noisy.
    5. Read backwards on purpose. On Hard, flip the word in your head. Looking for NIHPLOD is often faster than looking for DOLPHIN.
    6. Use the outline of the word. Shape matters: tall letters, round letters and repeated letters create a pattern your eyes can lock onto.

Tap the printer icon to print the current puzzle. The page uses large, clear letters with no background colours to save ink, a checklist of words and a separate answer page with the solutions shaded. Because you can choose any theme and level, you can produce an endless supply of free printable word searches for a party, a long car journey or a rainy afternoon.

    For teachers and parents

Word searches are a classic classroom warm-up. They reinforce spelling, because the child has to hold the exact sequence of letters in mind, and they build topic vocabulary: a lesson about the ocean, the weather or the human body can start with the matching theme. Easy mode keeps words horizontal and vertical, which is ideal for early readers, while Hard is a real challenge for teenagers and adults. Nothing to install and no accounts make it easy to use on school tablets.

A short history of word searches

The word search puzzle is usually credited to Norman E. Gibat, who published a puzzle called Word Square in the Selenby Digest in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1968. Teachers quickly began copying it for their classes and within a few years it was appearing in newspapers and puzzle magazines across the United States. Today word search books are among the best-selling puzzle books in the world, and the format has been adapted for nearly every language, including Spanish (sopa de letras, or "letter soup"), French (mots mêlés) and German (Buchstabensalat).

    Frequently asked questions

    Is this word search free?

Yes. Util.Ninja Word Search is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. It runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, and you can play as many puzzles as you like.

How do I select a word on a phone?

Put your finger on the first letter and slide to the last letter. The highlight snaps to straight lines, so a slightly wobbly swipe still works. You can also tap the first letter and then tap the last letter.

    Which directions can words go?

On Easy, words only run left to right and top to bottom. Medium adds diagonals. Hard hides words in all eight directions, including backwards and upwards, so you need to read the grid in every direction.

    What is the daily puzzle?

Every day there is one new themed puzzle that every player gets in the same grid. Solve it on consecutive days to build your daily streak, and compare times with friends.

    Can I print the puzzle?

Yes. Tap the printer button and your browser prints a clean black-and-white page with the grid and the word list, followed by a second page with the answers. It is ideal for classrooms, waiting rooms and travel.

    How many themes are there?

There are 32 themes, from animals, ocean life and space to pirates, Halloween and camping. Every new puzzle shuffles the words and the grid, so even a familiar theme looks new each time.

    How do hints work?

Tap Hint and the first letter of one remaining word starts to glow. You still have to find the direction yourself. Hints are unlimited, but using fewer earns more stars.

    How are the stars awarded?

Three stars for finding every word without hints, two stars when you used one or two hints, and one star otherwise. Your best time for each level is saved on your device.

How do I challenge a friend?

After you finish, tap Challenge a friend, type your name and share the link. Your friend gets exactly the same grid and theme and sees your time to beat.

Are word searches good for the brain?

Word searches train visual scanning, attention to detail, pattern recognition and spelling. They are a popular calm activity for children learning to read, for language learners building vocabulary and for adults who want a relaxing mental workout.
